Our region has one of the highest snow accumulations of anywhere in Japan. The local town, Iiyama, appropriately holds a major Snow Festival every year. Featuring snow sculptures at the festival’s downtown site, there is also a fire festival as well as a unique ‘omikoshi’ parade shrine procession, one of the only ones in the country to take place in the snow.
